IB Primary Years Programme

IB Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), designed for students aged 3 to 12, is a transdisciplinary programme of international education designed to foster the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It encompasses social, physical, emotional and needs in addition to academic development, and prepares students to be active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. The PYP draws on research and best practice from a range of national systems with a wealth of knowledge and experience from international schools to create a relevant, engaging, challenging and significant educational framework for all children.

Central to the philosophy of the PYP is a commitment to structured, purposeful inquiry as the leading vehicle for learning. At each grade level students study six units of inquiry. Through these inquiries, our students develop social, communication, thinking, research and self-management skills. Our programme emphasizes meaning and understanding so each unit is organized under a transdisciplinary theme to allow our students to explore and understand the nature of: human beliefs, families, communities, the physical world, human systems and how we share the planet. In the PYP a balance is sought between acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, development of conceptual understanding, demonstration of positive attitudes, and taking of responsible action. To achieve this balance, the five essential elements - concepts, knowledge, skills, attitudes, action - are incorporated into the PYP framework so that students are given the opportunity to:

  • gain knowledge that is relevant and of global significance
  • develop an understanding of concepts, which allows them to make connections throughout their learning
  • acquire transdisciplinary and disciplinary skills
  • develop attitudes that will lead to international-mindedness
  • take action as a consequence of their learning
