Bandung Independent School is an IB (International Baccalaureate) World School, offering the IB Diploma Programme in High School and the Primary Years Programme from age 3 -11 years. BIS was fully authorized by the IBO to run the PYP in 2004. The Language curriculum is designed to develop students’ abilities to communicate effectively in speech and writing, and to listen with understanding. It employs a variety of both literature-based and phonics approaches to enable students to be enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable readers. The Mathematics curriculum is structured and developmental, placing a particular emphasis on conceptual understanding and the processes of mathematical thinking. Both Language and Mathematics are integrated with Social Studies and Science, where appropriate, through carefully planned and resourced units of inquiry.

Complementing the core curricular areas is a variety of specialist classes. Every week the Elementary students attend the following classes which are usually taught by teachers other than their own class teacher: Indonesian Language, Chinese Language, Indonesian Studies, Visual Arts, Music and Physical Education. The Specialist Subject Teachers plan collaboratively and work closely with the Classroom Teachers to ensure that their subjects are integrated into the programme to deepen students’ understanding of the central ideas of inquiry units and the concepts driving the units.

Students study either Indonesian or Chinese for their foreign language. Parents who want their children to learn both Chinese and Indonesian may enroll their child in an after school cross grade level language class during which the child learns the language not currently studied during the school day.  After the PYP exhibition Grade 5 students study French for the remaining part of the school year.  These periods of French replace either Indonesian or Chinese.

We aim to develop balanced learners, and so we offer an outstanding range of extra-curricular school activities including swim team, football, basket ball, drama, art and dance.

Our carefully planned programme ensures that what our students learn is important, relevant, engaging and challenging. By making learning connections with our local, regional and global communities we strive to develop internationally minded people who understand and appreciate other cultures.

Every Friday afternoon the Elementary School community meets in the auditorium for our “Fabulous Friday” assembly. During these assemblies, the Elementary students present information about their learning. We also stage performances by the students and invite guests from the wider community. Parents are encouraged to attend our Fabulous Fridays as this is a wonderful way to celebrate our students’ learning and for parents to learn about our programme.
