I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to meet Evelyn Kho at Les Roches Hospitality Management School. Evelyn is finishing her first year there. It is situated in the beauty of the Swiss Alps and Les Roches has the reputation of one of the best Hospitality schools in the world. Evelyn is fortunate to study there and she is doing well.

As part of our Earth Day celebrations last month, students were given a plant to take home and look after. Students explained how they would look after their plant, and why plants are important.   PYP students created a ‘Poetree Pledge Tree’.  On recycled paper, they wrote poems or other text forms to explain the importance of plants in order to create a large ‘tree’.  Have a look at this Poetree Pledge Tree in the library to find out about our students’ ideas and opinions.  Thank you to Ms. Irma Yunita for organising this display!

TUNING IN

We started our How the World Works unit by sharing our prior knowledge about Movement, Force and Structure. The teachers questions such as ‘what is movement?’, ‘how does it look like?’, ‘can you move?’, ‘what makes things move?’, how can you make something move?’, ‘what makes something moves fast or slow?’ helped us to think and went further with the inquiry.

FINDING OUT AND SORTING OUT

We explored these concepts through various experiences, experiments and explorations.

FIELDTRIP TO THE SCIENCE MUSEUM 'PUSPA IPTEK'

We found out that movement is created by forces. There are different types of force and they can come in the form of ‘Pushing’ and ‘Pulling’.

GOING FURTHER

Soon we brought these finding and gained knowledge into our playful and fun activities.

This year’s JASIS Inter-school Swim Carnival took place at the Australian Independent School in Jakarta on Saturday.  We had 20 students from Grades 1-7 joining the swim team, plus three more students who took part in fun games.  Congratulations to the BIS team – we were placed fourth overall! Events included freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke, and during the swimming events of the other age group, students who were not swimming participated in the fun games.  Everyone really enjoyed themselves and our students showed fantastic commitment and enthusiasm. Several of our students won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons – great job!

Thank you to the parents who went with the BIS team and many thanks to Pak Deni, the team leader.

Grade 2 did a great job at last week’s Fabulous Friday when they shared what they had learnt during their recent ‘Sharing the planet unit’.  Students gave individual presentations on topics such as reducing the amount of air pollution and the advantages of riding bicycles, and then they organized a quiz to find out how much the other classes had learnt from the slideshows.  This was followed by activities in the Elementary classrooms such as a waste sorting game and a video.  Well done, Grade 2 and thank you to the Grade 2 teaching team – we all developed our understanding of environmental issues as a result of your assembly!
